Treatment for Cluster flies

Before treatment commences it is vital that the type of fly is identified because the problem may be caused by protein flies, such as blue bottles who feed on dead rodents for example.

In this case the root cause of the problem must be found and removed before treatment starts.

Cluster flies are treated using a special machine which emits an ULV treatment.(Ultra Low Volume). The very fine insecticidal mist floats within the natural air currents of the loft treating all surfaces of the loft.

So if you have a Cluster fly problem just give our helpful team a call, or even if it is just advice that you would like, we will be more than happy to help.

We are based in Chorley near junction 8 M61, we are literally no more than an hour away from anywhere in Lancashire.

The Pesky Cluster fly

There are several species of flies that gather together during the cooler months, starting approximately in mid September to mid October, for hibernation purposes that are collectively known as Cluster Flies. These flies are solitary during the summer when they cause no real problems but during the winter months can be a source of nuisance to the occupants of buildings chosen for hibernation sites.

Such buildings can be revisited annually by the flies, although it will not be the same adults returning. Homes in semi-rural areas tend to be more susceptible to cluster fly.

The actual Cluster Fly (Pollenia rudis) is a large fly about 10mm in length with a wingspan of 20mm. The thorax is dark grey and covered in golden hairs.

The female lays eggs on damp soil and beneath dead and rotting leaves. After about a week the larvae (maggots)hatch from the eggs and actively find earthworms to which they cling and then bore through the body wall. The maggots develop inside the worm. At or near to the death of the earthworm the larvae bores its way out again and pupates in the soil.

Since this is a ‘field’ insect, the life cycle is very dependent on the British weather, during a hot summer up to four generations per year might be possible.

Other species of fly that ‘cluster’ are the Autumn Fly, the Green Cluster Fly, the Yellow Swarming Fly and the Window Fly.

As the temperature drops they search for more protection and frequently form vast clustering masses in lofts and roof spaces. The numbers can vary from about a hundred to several thousand. Large aggregations of flies can produce a sickly smell, If the temperature warms up at any time in the roof space it can cause some flies to emerge from their hibernation and cause a nuisance to the occupants of the building.

Have you noticed that most Pest Control companies don't tell you the price upfront? Not us.

We offer complete reassurance from £75

Complete Cluster Flies removal is from £75

We charge £75 - based on an average sized house, which takes about a hour and fifteen minutes to complete.

Usually only one treatment is required, however having had a clusterfly problem you will be more to susceptible to having a further infestation in following years. This is because of pheromones (ie. markers) left by a previous generation.

Any property with more than one loft would be charged £30 for any additional loft to treat
