All about Fleas

Find out all about Fleas, how we treat them below...

Signs of a Flea problem

Fleas bites are small and itchy and occur predominantly on the lower limbs, however if family pets with fleas are allowed on beds or couches bites can appear all over the body.

Fleas can sometimes be seen in the sleeping areas of pets and in their fur. Occasionally they can be seen jumping.

Cat fleas

The cat flea is by far the commonest of the species that comes in contact with man, and despite its name it is also commonly found on dogs. The larvae of the cat flea will be found in the bedding or surrounding quieter areas of the living quarters of the host. Almost invariably cat fleas will attack the lower portions of the legs, especially around the ankles of humans. Frequent flea bites higher up the body would normally indicate human fleas, especially if the bites are concentrated around the waist and abdomen.

Even if pet bedding is disposed of in an attempt to eradicate fleas, re-infestation will occur unless extremely thorough cleaning has taken place. It is likely that unnoticed cocoons will remain within the carpet or under carpets, just waiting for a potential host to emerge and start the cycle again.

There may be a delay of several hours between a bite and the reaction. This may confuse attempts to discover the source of an infestation.

Treatment for Fleas

Fleas are treated with a residual insecticide spray to all floor areas, mattresses and sofas if appropriate (i.e. not leather, velvet etc). Before treatment all floor areas need to be clear to allow for spraying and bedding stripped off the beds.

TIP for preparing your house for a Flea treatment

Most people struggle to find storage areas to put bedding, and objects on the floor such as books, toys, shoes etc. before treatment but an empty dry bath can hold a lot of things.

There are two parts to a flea treatment programme:

  • De-infestation of the host ie cat or dog (this is done by the home owner)
  • De-infestation of the “nest” of the host (ie treating floor surfaces, behind and under furniture and areas where pets spend most time)

So if you have a Flea problem just give our helpful team a call, or even if it is just advice that you would like, we will be more than happy to help.

We are based in Chorley near junction 8 M61, we are literally no more than an hour away from anywhere in Lancashire.

The Pesky Flea

All adult fleas are wingless flattened laterally (ie tall and thin) and vary in colour from grey through to a dark mahogany. Their mouth parts are well-adapted to sucking blood from the host animal or human. An important characteristic of adult fleas is the adaptation of the hind legs into very muscular organs which are capable of projecting the flea vertically a considerable distance. This allows the flea to jump onto the body of a passing host. There are several fleas that can come into contact with humans.

Generally the fleas found in domestic situations and which will bite humans regularly will be cat or dog fleas.

Cat and dog fleas are small insects between 2-3mm long, and they are reddish brown in colour.
