Treatment for Cockroaches

Cockroaches need to be treated professionally because they breed rapidly and travel in large areas of a property, not just contained in the kitchen. Treatment is a combination of professional cockroach gel, traps and insecticidal spray.

So if you have a Cockroach problem just give our helpful team a call, or even if it is just advice that you would like, we will be more than happy to help.

We are based in Chorley near junction 8 M61, we are literally no more than an hour away from anywhere in Lancashire.

The Pesky Cockroach

The Cockroach belongs to the order Dictyoptera (vein – winged). Cockroaches are omnivorous and can not only eat a wide range of foods but will also eat paper, animal faeces and can be cannibalistic. As well as eating and contaminating foodstuffs they are also capable of spreading diseases. Cockroaches exhibit incomplete metamorphosis with the juvenile stages, known as nymphs, resembling the adults apart from the wings. Cockroaches do not lay eggs singly but in a egg capsule known as a ootheca. The number of eggs inside each ootheca can vary between species and typically can be between 14 to 50. In the UK there are two major species with three other species which occasionally cause problems.

Oriental Cockroach (Blatta orientalis)

The adults are dark brown and about 20-25mm long. It is primary nocturnal,a pest of warm environments, but is tolerant of colder conditions. The ootheca is quite large and will contain 16-18 eggs. The female will carry the ootheca for about 12 hours before she deposits it in a warm, sheltered spot preferably near a food supply. The ootheca would normally hatch within 6-12 weeks depending on the temperature.Once hatched the nymphs slowly develop through a series of moults to adulthood. There are between 7-10 moults and this can take anything from 6 months to 2 years. Adults can live up to a further 6 months and females can produce 5-10 ootheca.

German Cockroach (Blattella germanica)

This cockroach is also known as the steam fly which aptly describes its preference for extremely warm, humid conditions. It originated in North Africa not as the name implies from Europe. It is a small cockroach at 12-16mm. It is a buff or dark yellow colour. They eventually produce sizeable population groups , that in turn, create a strong sour smell from aggregation pheromones and defecation. They are able to climb smooth surfaces such as ceramic tiles and they can be found inside hotplates and close to steam pipes.Warm conditions are required for optimum breeding, around 30 degrees centigrade. The ootheca of the german cockroach is quite small but can contain an average of 40 eggs though the range is between 28 and 56. The ootheca is carried by the female up until shortly before the eggs are hatched. The nymphs have 5-7 moults which can take as little as 1 month to reach adulthood, though 3 months is normal. This means that low numbers of German cockroaches can soon develop into significant infestations given the ideal conditions.

American Cockroach (Periplaneta americana)

The American cockroach is the largest of the cockroaches in the UK measuring up to 40mm in length. It is usually confined to port areas, but they can also be found in heated situations such as animal houses, zoos and even hospitals.

Australian Cockroach (Periplaneta australasiae)

Smaller than the American cockroach at between 25-35 mm. It is common outdoors in hot areas such as the West Indies and Florida but in more temperate climates can be found in heated greenhouses which create tropical conditions. In the UK this cockroach can be a serious pest in large tropical greenhouses where it can damage the plants growing there. It can be imported on the roots of tropical trees brought into enhance enclosed shopping centres or swimming pools.

Brown-Banded Cockroach (Supella longipalpa)

It is a small cockroach similar in size to the German cockroach. There have been a small number of cases where established infestations have been discovered in the UK.

Prices

Have you noticed that most Pest Control companies don't tell you the price upfront? Not us.

We offer complete reassurance from £90 for a typical 2 visit treatment

Complete Cockroach removal is from £90 for a typical 2 visit treatment

When treating for cockroaches it is very rare that one treatment is sufficient, because the numbers can be significant and the insect can be spread over a large area of the premises. If it is a oriental cockroach a third treatment may be necessary.
